Combat Fire At Home

October 21st, 2011

Take the right steps to combat fire

More and more commercial businesses and homeowners are going through a period of financial consolidation to optimise space in existing properties by moving upwards rather than moving out.

Notably, homeowners are making better use of their lofts for storage and many businesses increase storage space through the use of mezzanine floors and also utilise flat roof space to locate such things as plant, motor and boiler rooms.

Access is a key consideration of this move upwards and global specialist Premier Loft Ladders is already established as the No1 choice for industrial, commercial and domestic stairway solutions. In particular, its popular Supreme range of superbly engineered aluminium concertina-style, easy-to-fit counter balance stairways, with fire resistant casings, is proving a real winner across all business and domestic applications.

Manufactured from high strength die-cast aluminium alloy components, the Supreme stairway is attached to a 1.5 mm steel hatchbox, and a trapdoor made from two layers of 1.5 mm steel infilled with 38 mm of mineral wool for fire resistance to 30 minutes and 75 mm for resistance to 90 minutes.

There is a 29mm wide lip to the bottom of the lining around the external edge which is designed to butt up against the ceiling to help prevent flame and smoke ingress. Similarly, a lip to the bottom of the steel trapdoor extends to within 15 mm of the lip on the lining.

The Supreme is suitable for a maximum floor to ceiling height of 4600mm and, in addition to being offered with 30 or 90 minute fire resistant casings, it is available with a host of other options. These include electrical operation, vertical access, suspended ceiling application, top operating mechanism, telescopic handrail, upper level guardrail and a double seal to the roof hatch to improve energy saving.

Premier supplies four different types of aluminium loft ladder – the Supreme, the Mini, the Elite and the Piccolo, together with an ever increasing selection of 3 part folding and 2 part wooden ladders. Its products are suitable in a wide variety of situations and all comply with EN 14975 (DN 4570) standards.

Prices across the entire Premier range are extremely competitive. In fact, the company will match the price of any like for like product found at a lower price elsewhere!

CAMP IN STYLE AND COLOUR

May 18th, 2011

With Boutique Camping
We’ve all been there before; stuck in a two man tent enduring the best of the British pouring rain with no room to take off your wet clothes and muddy wellies, or trying to sleep in the heat of the early morning sun, condensation dripping on you while your tent heats up like a greenhouse. Well those days are over! Say goodbye to pokey nylon tents and hello to the luxury and comfort that a spacious bell tent offers you.

Boutique Camping is a new and fresh tent manufacturer, aiming to have a different approach to camping. The name Boutique Camping derives from luxury camping at festivals and we can’t think of a better name to describe it. Like ‘Glamping’ (glamorous camping) Boutique Camping is cool and stylish. It’s fun, hassle free, relaxed and approachable and ultimately enhances your camping experience.

We make, supply, sell and hire our tents with an array of accessories that you may require to complete your bespoke camping experience. Although there are several bell tent suppliers out there, Boutique Camping strives to provide the best possible service and choice to our customers by adding our own boutique touches.

Our bell tents are 100% cotton canvass and are one of the lightest on the market weighing 285g psm rather than the 400g psm. This allows the tent breathe whilst also making it easier to transport. Boutique Camping is the first to launch a limited edition collection of four different colours; original natural sandstone and three fresh summer colours of Apple Green, Sky Blue and Sun-blushed Coral. These are available in two spacious sizes : the 4m, perfect for a couple or small group and the 5m, great for groups of up to 5 or 6. (RRP from £369)

Boutique Camping bell tents have zipped in ground sheets rather than a flappy separate ground sheet or none at all. This makes the tent secure, weather tight, and offers a quality finish to our products. In addition to this, our groundsheet system allows you to unzip it all and roll up the sides to air the tent or enjoy the breeze on a hot day.

Our range of accessories will continue to grow as we do. We currently offer luxury beanbags, enchanting sky lanterns, rugs, matts, stools, bunting, tables and inner tents. We are completely open to suggestions at Boutique Camping and aim to add that finishing stylish touch and comfort to your camping experience.

What Is Retro Furniture

August 4th, 2010

Do people really know what the term ‘retro’ means. It is used a lot these days but n=many don’t actually know the meaning of the expression. To go retro means delving into the past and looking at the impressions of people living in those times. Retro is short for retrospect. And now we have a chance to bring the substance of the past in our homes with the introduction of retro furniture.

Retro furniture is furniture that looks right from the old times, but unmistakably has that attitude of carrying impressions for the future. Basically, the furniture from the times of the sixties through the eighties (the Baby Boomer generation) is hot property. And that includes gramophones, retro loveseats and sofas, retro coffee tables, retro jukeboxes, entertainment centers, bars and stools and retro dance floors. Most retro furniture that can be obtained these days are basic household items and often not in good condition. But we at Elemental in London hunt down these valuable and interesting pieces and then lovingly restore them to something like their former glory. Visit our shop in London and if you don’t have the retro furniture bug before you arrive you will before you leave. Nostalgia has a way of drawing us in.

How does Retro Furniture look?
Let us not make a mistake here. Most retro furniture that you get today in the market place is not actually old furniture. It is made presently, but is designed just to look like the furniture that was popular in the 40’s 50’s and 60’s etc times. You will have dinner tables and chairs, chaise lounges, fireplaces with mantelpieces, carpets and rugs, grandfather clocks and those pesky but adorable canary clocks, everything that will take our grandparents down Nostalgiaville. Even the colors are the bright ones used in those times, and not the placid colors people prefer nowadays. And you will find that back in your retro furniture time, people wanted their furniture to make sure it stood up and take notice when visitors came in. Today’s retro furniture tries to achieve the same thing. But in reality it never quite makes it. There is no substitute for the real old thing and you will notice this difference when you touch an authentic piece.

Wood was the material of choice in making retro furniture, because that was the era of wood. Other materials were certainly used but wood prevailed. Retro furniture often has futuristic designs for the era they are made, but you must consider that those designs will still be outdated in today’s times.

Retro Furniture for a Whole New Ambience within the Home
People of all walks of life are now considering adding retro pieces and often a whole room to their houses. Although making the whole home a retro home may not be such a good idea, a single retro room is what many people are doing. And it works great as a theme room. Packed with retro furniture, it is the place you can go to if you want some solace from your routine times. Or, you can call your friends over and have a retro party . You will certainly be exposed to an extensive choice at our shop, or visit our site at www.elemental.uk.com to get an idea what we have to offer.

Franchising Law

July 14th, 2010

“Tips for Franchisors”
Daily Express 01.04.96
David Bigmore, a solicitor specialising in the industry, offers the following tips for the would-be franchisors:

SEEK expert help. See a franchise consultant, who will be able to develop your business experience into a customised system, an experienced accountant, who will work out the profitability for you and your franchisees, and a specialist lawyer who will advise on legal requirements.
CHOOSE the name of the franchised operation carefully and register it at the Trade Marks Registry.
DEVELOP a profile of an acceptable franchisee. Many of the problems experienced by franchisors derive from inadequate selection.
INVEST a great deal of time and money in developing a training system.
“Menace of law to nail pyramid swindlers”
The Express 19.05.97
A new law designed to tighten the controls on pyramid selling and multi-level marketing schemes threatens to make many franchises unworkable. The Trading Schemes Act 1996, which comes into effect in August, casts its net so wide almost all businesses, including franchises, are effected. Anyone breaking the law could be committing any of the four criminal offences and be liable to fines or even jail.
Having begun with a catch-all law, the DTI, whose aim is to deter swindlers went on to write exemptions in the Act designed to exclude legitimate businesses. But franchise lawyer David Bigmore says the exclusions are not wide enough and many franchises might still find themselves trapped.
The first type of exclusion states that single-tier trading schemes are exempt. But Bigmore claims the way the law is worded means franchisors who use self-employed salesmen or independent contractors, or whose franchisees employ independent contractors, may find themselves subjected to the Act.
The second exclusion exempts VAT registered businesses. That means smaller franchisees with turnovers of less that £48,000 must register, forcing them to raise their prices by 17.5%. The law could also allow a disaffected franchisee to threaten a deregister and plunge the entire franchise operation into the murky waters of the new Act.
Bigmore believes the DTI mistakenly categorises businesses rather than aiming at the intention to swindle. He adds “You can use any business as a fraudulent vehicle, and that’s more or less what the Act says. Basically what they’ve done is take the pyramid out of pyramid selling. All we can hope to do is change the exclusions.”
Bigmore and the British Franchisee Association are lobbying to free franchising from the oppressive law. In the meantime, franchisors wanting to know where they stand should seek legal opinion.
